Most coffee machines are between 12.5 and 13.2 inches deep, and most bar mats are 12 inches deep. That inch is where people get caught out. Width is almost never the issue. Depth is. Below are the published footprints of the machines people actually own, measured against a standard 18 x 12 inch mat.
The short answer
An 18 x 12 inch mat fits under every popular home espresso machine widthwise, with room left over for a cup, a tamper or a knock box. Depthwise, most machines run about an inch deeper than the mat, so the rear feet sit just off the back edge. The front of the machine, including the drip tray, sits on the mat. That is the part that matters, because that is where the spills happen.

Two things jump out of that table.
First, the widest machine on the list is the Breville Barista Express at 13.3 inches. An 18 inch mat still leaves 4.7 inches beside it. That is enough for a cup on the mat rather than on your counter, which is the whole point.
Second, the only machine that genuinely does not fit is the Magnifica Evo, and every other bean-to-cup superautomatic in that class. Those units are built around a full bean hopper and a brew group, so they run 16 to 18 inches deep. If you own one, you need a runner-style mat or you accept that the back half of the machine sits on bare counter.
Why the rear overhang does not matter much
A mat under a coffee machine is doing one job: catching what escapes. On an espresso machine that is drip tray overflow, purge water, portafilter knock spatter and milk. All of it lands at or in front of the machine, never behind it.
So an inch of rear overhang costs you nothing. What you do lose is the ability to slide the machine flush to a backsplash, because the mat edge sits under the front two thirds and the rear feet drop off it. If your machine lives tight against the wall, measure before you buy. If it sits with a few inches of clearance behind, which most do because of the water tank, the overhang is invisible.
What to measure before you order
- Depth of your machine, not the width. Width is the number everyone checks and the one that never causes a problem.
- Water tank access. Rear-loading tanks on Nespresso and Keurig machines need clearance behind. That clearance is usually more than the mat overhang, so it is already accounted for.
- What else lives on the mat. A tamper, a knock box, a milk jug and a cup need roughly 4 to 6 inches beside the machine. An 18 inch mat gives you that on everything except the Barista Express, where it is tight.
- Counter depth. A standard kitchen counter is 25 inches deep. A 12 inch mat plus a 13 inch machine leaves you plenty.
Runner mats versus square mats
If you have a full coffee station rather than one machine, the shape changes the answer. A long narrow runner, roughly 24 x 3 inches, sits along the front edge of the counter and catches drips from a line of equipment: grinder, machine, kettle. A rectangular 18 x 12 mat sits under a single machine and holds the cup beside it.

Material matters more than you would think
Two mats of identical size behave differently under a machine. A soft flexible mat compresses under the weight of a heavy espresso machine and can leave the unit sitting slightly unlevel, which affects extraction. A firmer rubber mat with a textured base holds the machine flat and grips the counter so the whole setup does not creep forward every time you lock in a portafilter.
